Stansted’s Mini History Lesson

It opened in 1943, but today the place is hardly recognisable as Britains 3rd busiest airport in the land.

In world war 2, airports were in short supply and being attacked daily. Britain needed every last bit of long tarmac it could get, not only to launch offensives in Europe but to help train the many new recruits flooding in to help the war effort. One of the most important aspects of wartime airfields were maintenance depots and RAF Stansted Mountifchet became exactly that.

The air base was used by both American and British air forces, with the Eighth Air Force of America being based here and it ran its usual job of maintenance and supply, repairing aircraft damaged in the war effort. Its use was short lived however as the D-Day successes lead to most of these operations being moved to France, but the base carried on as a supply storage area.

With many changes since, Stansted looks a lot different with its terminal building, airport parking facilities or the impressive Stansted airport hotels on the modern era and it would be some time before it came close to resembling what it has become today. Just after the war, it was used to house German prisoners of war and even though the Americans left in 1945, they were back again in 1954.

By 1966, the first charter planes were flying passengers to holiday destinations from the airport thanks to the new owners BAA but it was clear the government saw greater potential than simply avoiding the growing delays at Gatwick and Heathrow. The airports first dedicated terminal was duly complete in 1969 and had further expansion a year later.

Through the eighties and nineties, expansion continued until more than 15 million passengers used the airport. By 1988 it needed a new terminal building, which was finished in 1991 and still stands today along with other buildings that have sprung up around the area including the Stansted Hotels, car parks, restaurants and the close by train service.

Not just content with being a busy airport, the site has also hosted the rich and famous through films like Flight 93 and Last Chance Harvey as well as many TV shows including Eastenders.
