Flying over Antarctica for the day takes the plane above the Magnetic South Pole.  The compass needle jumps and wiggles as they cross the area. Many meters beneath the comfortable passengers, the ice sheet has been etched into wave-like patterns by a relentlessly blowing polar wind as it heads out to sea. Although the tourists hover high above, the trails of snow, making their way to the ocean, resemble slowly shifting, feathery steam, meandering across the glacier’s wave shaped sculptures. As a person looking for antarctica tours you should visit that site.

The first team of explorers were able to reach the magnetic South Pole in 1909, after dangerously traveling through ice and snow in a journey that took them 2,030km in 134 days. Leaving, under four short hours ago, the tourists, seated comfortably on the jumbo jet, are now flying over the pole, and will marvel at the natural beauty of this final wilderness left on the Earth, as they take in the antarctic landscape for a few hours, before heading back to to complete their round trip.

The Magnetic South Pole is the point at which several magnetic force lines collide.  These forces greatly affect compasses as airplanes fly over Antarctica. Equipped with satellite guidance and a gyroscope, the jumbo jet is able to hold it’s course. Explorer’s reached the more popular geographic South Pole in the early 1900’s.  It is about 2,500 kilometers away from the magnetic South Pole. Similar to the airman who claimed the first flights over both the North and South Poles in the 1920’s, passengers on this flight can claim they achieved their destiny while sitting down.

Barely separated from the passengers, the Antarctic winds rocket frigidly past. Within the cabin itself, passengers are relaxed and warm.  Some are only wearing t-shirts and shorts and sip on chardonnay. By the time the jumbo jet was roughly three hours south of the first icebergs could be seen and a party atmosphere took over on the plane. Sightseers of all ages now traipse about the plane, trying to find the best place to see the icebergs. This site teaches you about antarctic tours.

As the plane gets closer to the magnetic South Pole, the icebergs begin to multiply and begin to take on unusual geometrical shapes along the Antarctic coast, shining like bits of glass and broken mirror in a striking display against the dark blue sea. Seeing the glacier’s meeting the sea is awe-inspiring to the passengers, who have been sharing windows so that everyone can get a good photo or video. They were then treated to the wonder of the Trans Antarctic Mountains, as well as the glaringly white ice caps that are streaked with blue.

These new and exciting day trips to the Antarctic are a revival of an old flight pattern that used to bring two major airlines over the dark and frozen continent. Not only do the passengers get to see the glaciers, mountains, coasts and icebergs, but they can also fly over an abandoned French research base.  It used to be a penguin colony before the French took over.  A tidal wave later destroyed the base. It was geologists who were the first to reach the base, which is not too far from the South Magnetic Pole.

This gentleman cannot forget the sight he had seen when he went to Antarctica and saw the sunrise over the continent’s plains. A religious moment, he calls it. There’s a very real presence of God down there, there’s no doubt, said the 53 year old satellite technician from Texas, who spent most of the time working at a NASA tracking station at McMurdo Station. He is only one of those who ever got the privilege of going to this large mass of volcanic ash and ice. You will gain a deeper understanding about antarctica cruise prices by checking out that resource.

It is pretty normal for people to come here to first pass by McMurdo station, which is at the edge of the Ross Ice Shelf. Formerly a US military outpost, McMurdo, which has the look and feel of a high country Western mining camp is now administered and funded by the National Science Foundation.

There’s not much one can do in that place. The outdoors are extremely cold, so going outdoors is out of the question unless you have thick layered polar clothing and a hardy constitution. Looking at the beauty around him even as he worked long and difficult hours was a practice for him. The month of May is something he anticipates, as this is the time where he gets to enjoy four hour sunsets over the Royal Society Mountains.

Seeing the names of the 1908 Shackleton expedition members was one experience he cannot also forget. The men at McMurdo will forever remain in his memory, he says. The biographies there are incredible, he said, and everybody’s on a first name basis, from the PhDs to the janitors. You can get the best exciting antarctica cruises information by visiting this website.

He does not fear the threatening landscape at all. Antarctica has not intimidated this woman of 47 years who had ventured to see a breeding ground of penguins. There is always an attraction and interest she feels toward penguins. When I would be at the zoo, they were always my favorites. I always think of them as little human beings. I don’t use the word cute, so I think I would describe them as being handsome.

When she went to Antarctica, she saw something she can never forget. It is the image of so many King Penguins everywhere on the shores of a bay. The scene was the most powerful thing that she had ever laid her eyes on. Trips to The Ice aren’t meant only for those with academic grants and pilot’s licenses.

Those who aren’t keen on being a part of the modern day Foreign Legion but are still willing to take the polar adventure may also be able to do so through other means. A fee of $3,000 is given by cruise lines that travel from New Zealand to Antarctica. Going to the South Pole would cost more if you travel by air. It’s for anyone who wants to have an adventure and has lots of money to spend.

For the lost island empire of Atlantis, countless films not to mention books have speculated about it. It is hard to tell where it is or what it was. Just this is certain  Atlantis is mentioned in passing in Timaeus and Critias, two dialogues or essays written by the Greek philosopher Plato around 360 BC The subject of Atlantis continues to fascinate serious researchers and amateur sleuths. When it comes to this, a bookstore online has 438 titles. One full feature movie released by the Disney company was Atlantis The Lost Empire. Visit this site for further information on antarctica cruises.

Most scholars who believe Atlantis did exist in some form insist Plato couldn’t have made everything up about that sacred island which then beheld the light of the sun, brought forth fair and wondrous and in infinite abundance. Can another historical figure be responsible for Plato’s Atlantis? Without telling people whether Atlantis was fact or fiction, Plato died a dozen years after.

From Solon the historian came about Plato’s use of Atlantis and he was a real person. As said by skeptics, Plato might have been fooled by Solon’s made up tale. There has been much said about how Plato was incapable when it comes to being as descriptive of a person despite his intellectual nature and so he could not have possibly come up with an image of a series of rings reflecting the empire with the royal palace at the middle and having dug out canals leading into the cities not to mention numerous statues and bath houses.

Atlantis may have existed but when it comes to the span of time nobody really knows but it is rather confusing that this kind of developed empire could be well capable of  making nuclear bombs not to mention flying machines but 9000 BC saw its demise according to Plato. Where exactly was Atlantis? That’s the second big mystery, next to whether Atlantis existed at all. It was said to have been in Thira, an island destroyed during 1470 BC by a volcano. When you would like to get more information on antarctica trip check out this site.

Probably the Azores in the Atlantic off of the coast of Spain could be another possible Atlantis location. New underwater ruins discovered by people are frequently linked to possible Atlantis natures. A number of European explorers relied on maps with Atlantis located in them for sailing the world.

Explorations relied in the use of their amazing flying machines made from the skin of elephants. Atlantis may also be located off of the modern day Bimini coast. Considering the devastation that occurred, some lives were spared. Egypt became the new settlement for these survivors and it has been said that they shared their knowledge here. Service as the storage for records of Atlantis in the Great Sphinx is a secret chamber.

Ice in Antarctica was only during 4000 BC. Everything started with either an underground explosions or a seismic upheaval. Existing civilizations had no chance of survival with some of these. From an author came the information that Atlantis was an island in the Atlantic ocean and this discovery came from his research attempts as he was writing about it. You could say that its loss is due to a nuclear explosion. Back then they too carried nuclear weapons similar to us. Due to the civil war in Atlantis, they blew themselves up after fighting with nuclear weaponry.

Measuring only 1/100th of an inch long, the pink mite is the most southern-living animal known to man. This tiny critter likes algae and fungi and looks a lot like a spider. An entomologist from a Hawaiian Museum recently discovered the pink mite a mere 309 miles from the South Pole. This same scientist also found lichens only 266 miles from the Pole.  That’s as close to the Pole as life has ever been found. Go to this site for further information on travel to antarctica.

Some written reports claim that only insects and their kin can live year round on Antarctica. You’ll need some sort of magnification to see the majority of the 56 species of arthropods that have already been classified on Antarctica. A wingless fly is the biggest of them.  It’s about the size of a horsefly. Lying dormant until the air reaches 32 degrees Fahrenheit, they then become active.

The great blue whale and many diverse creatures make the waters around Antarctica their home.  This is the opposite of life on land. Scientists opted to use a four by six foot capsule to look at the life under the water. Using one of the six windows to peer out, scientist took turns viewing the sea. A hydrophone was included in the design so that ocean sounds could be recorded.

One jelly fish swam by with tentacles trailing thirty feet behind it.  They didn’t see many other fish. Seals were constantly surrounding the chamber.  They were very curious about it. The seals could be heard buzzing, whistling, beeping and chirping. This underwater cacophony was a first for at least one scientist. You will find that further information on trips to antarctica is on that site.

These noises help the Weddell seals to navigate and communicate. The navigation theory helps scientist understand how the seals could find food and sources of air in the dark waters. Scientists are analyzing recordings of the seal sounds. Due to the high frequency and range of some of the seal sounds, humans can’t even hear them.

The creation of these sounds by the seals still stumps scientists. Underwater finds the seals with sealed nostrils and mouths. Weddell seals have been recorded diving up to 1500 feet in depth.  This is the farthest any mammal has ever been officially recorded as diving. They’ve even tracked on seal who stayed underwater for 28 minutes before needing to breathe. A sample of seal mother’s milk was collected by a lucky zoologist. Seal pups add weight faster than any other known mammal; this could be due to the fact that seal milk has much more fat in it than human milk does. In fact, a baby seal only takes a month and a half to quintuple its own weight.

The Antarctic seas have been traversed time and time again by wetsuited scientists. They found red seaweed, as well as other seaweed, growing on the bottom. They also found red and white species of starfish, five foot long worms and sponges that measured four feet in diameter.

Traveling to Antarctica on two separate occasions was a woman who has always said that she did not prefer to be exposed to cold weather making her the least favorable candidate for this kind of voyage. A way to return to the area is what the woman desires. The lady says that she knew it was the coldest continent on earth. Actually, what made her decide on this matter is her goal of being one of the few people who ever tried this out. You will gain a deeper understanding about cruise to antarctica by checking out that resource.

She had a stint with scientists in 1988 when she became part of their support crew 825 miles from the South Pole at McMurdo Station on the Ross Ice Shelf. Her job title was general field assistant, but the plain spoken lady says, in common everyday language, it’s better known as a go for. When she was preparing for the trip she had to read Survival in Antarctica written by the National Science Foundation. Aside from an extensive physical exam she was also required to get shots. Explaining why these are vital is the lack of medical facilities there.

If there is the need for medical treatment then you will need a helicopter to fly you out and it can cost the government a pretty penny and get other people in trouble at the same time. There is an outdoor survival school that will be expecting her when she comes to Antarctica. Part of her training will include the ability to make a sleeping shelter when she cannot find the base and locating crevasse fields.

A covered walkway led from the tent to a bathroom where four lavatories and two showers were located. There was a sign saying that they could only take a two minute shower per week. Only when needed should toilets be flushed. Such a rule applies until further notice. Extinguishing fires at the station is their main reason for this. A number of equipment experienced mechanical breakdowns especially at the water plant due to consistent use in sub zero temperatures. When you would like to get more information on best antarctic cruise check out this site.

More water cutbacks are required when this occurs. Purposes like cooking and drinking always have their own supplies of water. They are not particularly concerned when it comes to water for flushing, showering, and doing laundry.

Advanced planning for all their phone calls was also necessary. Waiting for a phone call is necessary so you need to put yourself on a waiting list until the weather clears up and your call comes through. Assisting in communications are ham radio operators.

Weather that was extremely cold was the worst inconvenience they had to deal with over there. Lasting from October through December was the summer that can measure at a temperature of 32 degrees. January was when the temperature changed again. Diaries were used for her records of any temperature changes.

If necessary, pair work based on the weather may happen. Often curtailing outdoor travel is the weather. Some weather conditions are so severe, travel outdoors is strictly forbidden. Realizing a lot of personal things due to isolation was her. Changes happened to her. No insecurities were part of her attitude before going to Antarctica. Now, she knows there are things beyond her control, things she can’t conquer alone. She is able to relax after realizing this.

There’s something about that continent. Astounding is the ability to be with a limited few in a place where no one has ever dared to be in to before. Man has stepped foot in almost every destination. May it be the timber or mountains and even the rivers, man has been there.

The on time arrival at the airport must have seemed the warmest homecoming after 18 days in the icy Antarctica. The Antarctica expedition’s four members had arrived home to a hero’s gathering for roughly three weeks at the lowest part of the Earth. This is just an unbelievable emotional event, this is history. When you would like to get more information on antarctica trips check out this site.

Terrible weather condition restricted the Antarctica’s scientific quest for about 10 more days than anticipated, therefore, as the arrival day finally came, the welcome party was arranged immediately. An hour before the plane was due, close relatives and friends sat in black plastic airport chairs peep in at the large windows on the landing field and glancing at their watches. Down the hall, 25 students gathered with teachers and parents, nibbling turkey sandwiches and preparing to pamper their teacher with hugs.

Troops brought a lot of heart structured balloons, a bundle of roses and a pile of handcrafted welcome signs bearing images of penguins. Four members of the team brought along two handbags of meteorites which will later be taken photographs, cut open and experimented and tales of a mission accomplished. The quest also included two expert astronauts who worked at NASA before, a NASA scientist and a resident of Chicago who contributed notably in funding part of the expedition. The mission directed the team to the Patriot Hills of Antarctica, South Pole and Thiel Mountains even though it is not so high as the Rockies, but just as spectacular.

Arriving in the States, there was a complaint made with regard to the technology brought along the trip. Inadequate were the satellite phones. They make you remember too much what you left behind. Sooner or later he will once again be a professor of astronomy and geology in a populated continent. When you would like to get more information on antarctica trip check out this site.

Adventures for these people consisted of such trips to unfamiliar territories before. There were two of them plus their scientific team who all went to Turkey last summer to view the solar eclipse from the coast of the Black Sea. What they experienced over there is similar to the situation of their unexpected yet extended stay in Antarctica. At the time there was an intense earthquake and so they stayed long after the solar eclipse was over. Measuring at about 5.5 was the magnitude that they felt when the earthquake struck as they were 200 miles away from its epicenter.

Camaraderie on the trip was what he considered to be the best part of the trip and he also said that there was less stress with images of blue fields and snow covered scenery. For the team which had a retired NASA scientist it was somewhat an exclusive club. The bunch was down to earth and the people were easy to converse with. There was no room for egos but only fun. Days in Antarctica, expected or otherwise, were spent with much reading, talking, snowmobiling, and cross country skiing as well.

From boots to goggles to heavy gloves to an energetic smile is what a 24 year old team member thought about wearing for this particular trip a month ago and she modeled this for reporters and staff members. A sweatshirt and some jeans plus some sneakers were what she wore back home with her cheerful smile. She was chosen to go on the mission to a Mars like continent because she was fond of space science. It was a mind blowing learning experience for the students. In order to learn, everything should be tied in. Teachers who are also explorers allow the kids to live science and history.

She used the trip to perform scientific experiments on rocks, gravity and temperature the same experiments students were doing back home. The relaying of data to the 11 classrooms was done through satellite phone and email. For the questions as well as the answers, they were all pretty funny. To blame for the comedy were the differences among answers. Her experience taught the students that data can be a little different when performed in a snowy desert with temperatures plunging to well below zero.
