Ice Mule Love

Now that the dreary, damp days of winter have been replaced by the balmy temperatures of spring, I am reminded why being a California resident is so desirable. Vibrant green grass and patches of mustard flowers cloak the rolling hills. Our beaches are impeccably clean and belong to the locals while they are still too chilly for water sport seeking tourists. The peachy-pink sunsets and velvet blue night skies blend into our majestic mountains on the horizon.. It simply is heaven on earth. My husband, kids and I have begun spending much of our weekends outside since all this beauty is just outside our door.. We have enjoyed spontaneous picnics in meadows flanking Ortega Highway and quick trips to the SanBernardino mountains to engage in snowball fights. There have been sun filled and exhausting days spent peddling our beach cruisers back and forth on the boardwalk between the Huntington, Newport and Balboa Piers, followed by evening marshmallow roasts at the fire pits on the beach. Yes, life is good. For each of these daytrips we pack an arsenal of supplies; Frisbees, a playing cards, blankets, beach towels, sunscreen, lip balm, snacks, sodas, water bottles and so on. My most beloved of all these little provisions is the Ice Mule. While shopping at a hunting/fishing shop, my husband found our Mule ( which is funny because he would never hurt a fly). Thinking it might be of use one day, he brought it home. He was right. We rarely leave home without this beverage cooler, our snacks and drinks stay cold for hours and hours.. In fact, I a short time ago realized that it had been left in our SUV overnight and was dreading to removing the deviled eggs that surely would emit disgusting fumes upon removal from their Tupperware tomb. To my surprise the eggs and the water bottles inside the soft cooler were still cold to the touch, even though they had been in the bag for over 24 hours! The Ice Mule now joins me on jaunts to the grocery store. My ice cooler gets loaded up with all of the cold items and I can proceed with my errands before returning home. I truly love this thing! Soon the lush green countryside will turn golden brown and the seaside will become a jam-packed, noisy mecca for the masses. Tourists will be looking for parking spots closest to the beach (hint, these don’t exist in the summer) and traffic on PCH will be reduced to a slow crawl. You can bet that our Mule will be with us to keep our drinks, munchies, sun tan lotion and temperaments cool when we do decide to combat the summer crowds. On the especially hot 90 degree days, which we always see toward the end of summer, it will be time to sit by the pool with our soda pop, ice tea and lemonade. Even though the kitchen will be only be a few steps away I intend to use the Ice Mule poolside. In fact I might not depart from my lounge chair all summer long.
